Dead Time

BBC Audio adventure, Sept. 7, 1998

The first half of this story has a lot of promise as things are mysterious, something is attacking the Doctor’s mind, Sam is also captured and everything is just chaos.  The TARDIS just strands them somewhere in space, where there’s nothing and for some reason, the Doctor does his usual investigating without any tools.  Doesn’t he have instruments and things in the TARDIS to take a look around without going out there?  Of course he does.  So the start to this story is strong, with a few minor questions.

But then the culprit is revealed.  I don’t want to spoil the story but at the same time, it all takes a nosedive once it’s revealed.  Sometimes, when the solution is revealed in time lord type gobbledygook, I’m just along for the ride and rather enjoy myself.  And sometimes it’s just annoying.  This story would have the annoyance factor!  Blah, blah, blah, this is why it happens, here’s where we are, lock, zing, all done and wrapped up in a tidy little bundle.  The Doctor has so much stuff and so many alien bad guys stored away in his mind that he’s a virtual card catalog of baddies!  If one of them ever escapes and releases the others, it will not be pretty.  For anyone anywhere NEAR the Doctor, that’s for sure!  And how the mind worm in Something Inside doesn’t release a few baddies I’ll never know.  Ultimately, once we find out the story on the villain, this adventure just unravels.
