Exile

Big Finish Audio drama, October 2003

Here’s the one story where the Doctor is played by a woman.  It’s a bit of an odd thing, listening to the Doctor just BE a woman, actually.  Not bad or anything.  Just odd.  But I think Arabella Weir pulls it off in fine style.  The story isn’t that great for her pull off but she does a fine job as the Doctor!

That said, what the heck were they thinking with her being an beer swilling party girl?  Would the Doctor really stoop to such a thing?  hmmm.  Giving up isn’t in his (now her!) nature so it’s not quite believable.  Though wow, she really is paranoid a bit.  I thought that the Doctor couldn’t get drunk except on ginger beer, anyway…  Then the pathetic timelordy twosome show up to try to “capture” the Doctor and just have their schemes and ideas.

It just never really works out for the Doctor or the Time Lords, does it?  She’s moved on from the utility belt days and is just hiding out, enjoying her time amongst the humans.  Being a party girl is an odd take on the Doctor, I must admit.  In returning to this audio, I really enjoy it as she runs amok trying to help people and generally messing it up.  At Sainsbury’s.  doh!  The twosome put a “find” on her and get her to her trial long after the due date so no one even cares anymore except the two Time Lords who bring her in.  All in all, a rather entertaining story where the Doctor gets to try the hiding out thing in a slightly different vein.

Arabella Weir (The Doctor), Hannah Smith (Cherrie), Jeremy James (Cheese), Toby Longworth (Time Lord 1), David Tennant (Time Lord 2), Graham Duff (Mr. Baggit), Nicholas Briggs (The previous Doctor)
