BBC Audio book, 2007
This is the audio edition of the book by Jacqueline Rayner and it’s well worth a listen! It’s a wonderful listen from beginning to end. There are twists I didn’t know were coming and even the ones that were predictable weren’t really. Why didn’t the last Time Lord light show up before the Doctor arrived? That is very mysterious, if you ask me. Convenient. I won’t give away the ending but it is quite satisfying and very, well, how can I put this, huh? No way! Huh. And all of that is in a good way!
Sometimes it’s very difficult to rant and rave about the good audios, honestly. And this is definitely one of them! Maybe some day I’ll review all of the books I have but that has been covered by others better, I’m certain. And it’s a very limited collection and all thanks to my friend Rob Werner in Boston! He knows the good books and occasionally sends me a surprise package of them. So it’s a limited but excellent selection! So the audio of the book works just as well for me, since I’m an avid iPod listener.
And it’s hard to go wrong with a Jacqueline Rayner story, too. She wrote The Marian Conspiracy and Dr. Who and the Pirates, so she did at least a good job and even wrote the only Big Finish musical episodes to date. Good stuff! Then there’s Joseph Lidster, who abridged the story, and he can either do really good stuff (The Rapture, Master) or not so much (100, The Reaping, The Gathering). And having Freema Agyeman read the book? Excellent move!
