Return to the Web Planet

2007, Special Release VI

An interesting addition to the other five side audios though it isn’t as disappointing as the other ones, except Shada, which was excellent.  The Doctor and Nyssa encounter some large ant/termites and some flying friends, who used to be butterflies on the evolutionary scale.  They’ve evolved and Hedyla loses her wings due to some torment by opposition to Acheron.  The flyers who have messed with her have been punished but that’s not pertinent until suddenly, at the end.  I thought they weren’t in contact with the main group?  Odd that.  And the two people who aren’t really people—that’s a bit confusing as well.  Who are they sent out by again?  It sounds like they were sent out from the Web Planet but they’re not, obviously.

The cover to the story is REALLY annoying as it harkens back to the original Web Planet story and there are just no Cybermen to be found at all in this tale.  I would love to listen to the original Web Planet story so I can figure out where this all falls into that mythos.  But without that firmly in my mind, this audio drama is good but not really a revisitation as the author intended, I think.  It’s okay but not spectacular or bad.  Just there.
