Big Finish Companion Chronicle, November 2009
The Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough get pulled into this pocket universe prison, in theory. And things progress from Turlough’s perspective with a chronicler attached to his side called Huxley, though Turlough calls him Hippo after a friend he had on Verbatim 6. And Turlough gets sucked into the world and the problems within it through Huxley, oddly enough. The writing is excellent and I won’t spoil the device used to get the listener to the end point but I do wonder how Turlough will decide to act as the guards come for him in his cell…
What can I say about this audio without giving it away? Turlough is impulsive and sly, though he does notice “Why does everyone think I’m sly?” He’s able to be duplicitous without really showing the Doctor or others his duplicity, I think. But they just get this feeling to be suspicious about his motivations. I think he’s a great companion!
The concept of the pocket universe and the motivations of the aliens within it is the weak link to the story. There just isn’t a lot there about them and it felt like there was a piece missing somehow. But this is a great story overall!
