Helicon Prime (#2.2)

  Big Finish, Companion Chronicles

The Doctor and Jamie land on Helicon Prime, where the Golden Section keeps people pacified while enjoying the highest class of service. But there’s a problem as the Golden Section isn’t working on an ambassador type and he’s knocking off other folks. The Doctor investigates the deaths and is thwarted by Ambassador Dromeo. Things are progressing apace, with the Ambassador searching for a Fennis treasure. And the Doctor is playing the fool, to keep the enemies off track and Jamie keeps pestering him for details. The Ambassador and Weimer, his assistant, are searching for the treasure, destroying Helicon Prime in the process. And so the treasure remains hidden from all, though where, no one will know.

Frazer Hines does a fantastic job of reading the story, with all of the various voices. The story captures the 2nd Doctor era fantastically and gives us an adventure with lots of running around and looking for clues. And the ending gives you more to come ideas though I don’t believe anything will be done to “finish” the story. But it didn’t ever make me think that Jamie was in any real danger, nor the Doctor. Though at the end perhaps Jamie was in danger during the epilogue but it didn’t feel real. Very good but not the best 2nd Doctor story.
