A Death in the Family (#140)

   Big Finish Main Range

If there was a way to give this more than 5 jelloids for a rating, I would! This is truly what a 5 jelloid story is. It's a quintissential Seventh Doctor story from beginning to end. The Word Lord is back, the most powerful monster that the Doctor has ever faced, with the threat of there being more Word Lords out there. How do you defeat someone who is in words and can control the universe with them? It's ish... gone bad in a big way!

So the Doctor does what he does best and saves the day, but he also manipulates the day. And the choices his friends make to help him are so emotionally charged the I found myself crying several times throughout this audio play. The cliffhangers are stunning in a way that sticks. The Word Lord is an unknown element so that dependence on history to have everyone survive is no longer an option. You just don't know what will happen next! And it's magnificent. The long arm of the Doctor controlling the outcome, counting on his friends to help him save the day, and the sacrifices Ace and Hex make, the ultimate journey of Evelyn Smythe, it's just all insanely intense and touching and it's bringing me to tears now, just thinking about it.

This is a classic Seventh Doctor episode. If you are thinking of buying any Doctor Who audio from Big Finish, BUY IT. It's just that good. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for emotional storylines...
