The Black Hole (#2.3)

  Big Finish, The Early Adventures

This story introduces an old villain with his personality totally intact, displaying what he is good at. I'll try not to spoil that but wow, this story is fantastic! The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria arrive on a spaceship as the TARDIS got "kicked" out of the vortex by some phenomenon. They find a bunch of humans with a commander (Flail) who is in charge and trying to solve the issue. Meanwhile, there is a Time Lord, Constable Pavo, also working on closing the black hole that has appeared. They stop the black hole using their TARDIS's and the Doctor heads off to solve an issue at Pavo's request. THEN it gets really interesting.

I don't want to ruin the rest of the story. Suffice it to say that this is an amazing story from this point onward. The first part is great but then it quickly moves into WOW. There were a few distracting things - I find Deborah Watling's voice very odd sounding, like her mouth can't move right. But I get used to it quickly. And sometimes it is tricky to tell the difference between Frazer Hines being the Doctor and Frazer Hines being Jamie McCrimmon. But I get used to it. Minor issues with this story for one fantastic tale! Well worth the listen. Plus David Warner is the narrator! You can’t go wrong there.

Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon/The Doctor), Deborah Watling (Victoria Waterfield), Rufus Hound (Constable Pavo), Janet Dibley (Commander Flail), Anthony Keetch (The Seeth). Narrated by David Warner.
